Disney World Re-Opening Weekend

Published Jul 13 2020

Wait times at the Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom were at record lows as Disney World reopened on July 11th. The parks had been closed since mid-March due to COVID-19. From a data perspective, it was quite interesting to observe.

July 2019 vs July 2020

A combination of limited capacity, the large presence of COVID-19 cases in Florida, and scaled back park offerings likely all contributed to the well below normal wait times at both parks. The average wait time today at the Magic Kingdom never eclipsed 15 minutes. Compared to the same Sunday this time last year, the average wait time was down 70% or almost 24 minutes. Animal Kingdom, which typically has a higher average wait time due to fewer attractions, was down 77% or 34 minutes compared to this time last year

Those willing to take the exposure risk found some incredible wait times. Avatar: Flight of Passage averaged over a 2 hour wait in 2019; today it averaged 15 minutes while yesterday was even less. Likewise, the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, which averages an 85 minute wait, averaged a 20 minute wait today.

It will be interesting to see if capacity is increased in the coming days and months. Hollywood Studios and EPCOT both open this Wednesday. With no Park Hopping available and more parks open to disperse crowds even more, wait times may become even lower in the next few days. Stay tuned and stay healthy.
